FARR FAMILY NEWSLETTERS (BACK ISSUES)
JANUARY 1997
Overview
We have much to report this issue as we had an outstanding reunion in Ogden, Utah in August, 1996. We also had an exciting officer/ trustee and research meeting in November in Salt Lake. We will cover both of these meetings in detail.
Reunion 1996
During the first weekend of August 1996 the Winslow Farr Sr. Family had their State Centennial family reunion. Because it was the centennial of the state of Utah, President David Farr, and the Chairman of the reunion, Dick West, determined more than two years ahead of the reunion that it would be appropriate to hold the reunion at the Lorin Farr Park, located on Canyon Road in Ogden, Utah.
Further Comments on the Reunion
We can't begin to thank our reunion chairman, Dick West, and his outstanding committee enough for the excellent reunion put on in Ogden, Utah August 1-3, 1996.
An Update on Temple Work
On the morning of January 31, 1997, I received a phone call from Elder Richard G. Scott, of the Quorum of the Twelve apostles. Elder Scott said that he had checked the family file that was in my name at the Salt Lake Temple and noted that there were several names that needed sealings to be completed.
Continuing with Reunion News
The next day, Friday, August 2nd, we had registration day for the reunion at the Lorin Farr Stake Center, near the Lorin Farr Park. Sandy Westover and Mary Lou Lloyd faithfully attended the table while Jeff Hansen and others made sure that things were in order for our afternoon meetings.
Family Biographies
We are now printing the color pages of our Winslow Farr Sr. Family Biographies. This is the book we took orders for and collected $22.00 at the reunion and after. The book contains 61 biographies of Winslow and Olive Farr descendants. The book also has pictures of our ancestors and of the reunion.
Officer/Trustee Meeting
We held our leadership meetings Saturday, Nov. 5th, 1996 at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
Research Report
Following our officer/trustee meeting, Ron Farr and his committee conducted our research meeting. We owe them our gratitude for their continuing efforts to expand our knowledge and appreciation for our ancestors.
We heard from a number of different researchers regarding their efforts on the various lines on Maybeth Farr Reimann's chart.
Five Accomplishments of Your Research Team
There are several families where family researchers have found additional information and have made corrections. As we focus on these ancestor families, we are bound to find more information since there are so many new records that are being found, published and copied.
Special Needs
Those of you who have donated to our family research are receiving our in-depth family Research Letter that comes out once a year. We are in need of an editor for that letter.
Obituaries
Zella Farr Smith and Morrill Spencer Farr.
Newspaper Articles
References to some newspaper articles in the Ogden Standard-Examiner and the Salt Lake Tribune about the Farr reunion. Also an article of interest in the LDS Church News.
Winslow Farr Jr. Family Reunion
If you are a Winslow Farr Jr. descendant please mark your calendars for June 26-27th 1997 at Perception Park in Ogden, Utah.
Lorin Farr (Part I)
This is the first in a series of articles about Lorin Farr, son of Winslow Farr Sr. and Olive Hovey Freeman Farr, that will be published over the next several letters. Lorin was born July 27, 1820. There was much scurry and worry at Lorin's birth about his safe delivery. Grandfather Elijah Freeman kept things in balance with his wry sense of humor.
Emily Jane Covington Farr (Part III)
In March of 1882, the U.S. Congress passed the Edmunds-Tucker Act which outlawed the practice of polygamy. By 1884, government agents were gathering evidence and issuing warrants for the arrest of many of the Mormon polygamists. In October of 1885, while Winslow was at work at the ZCMI Co-op in Ogden, the underground sent word that the U.S. Marshals were on their way to place him under arrest.
Lower Waterford Cemetery
Situated on the Connecticut River a mile down the road from the courthouse in Lower Waterford is situated a cemetery. In this cemetery are buried many Freemans, Farrs and Hoveys. Winslow and Olive's parents, Ashael Farr, Lydia Snow Farr, Elijah Freeman and Olive Hovey Freeman lay buried. They were buried there in the 1820's.
Financial Report
I am listing below the Summary Report for the financial transactions of our Winslow Farr Sr. Family Organization for the year ended December 31, 1996.
