BIOGRAPHIES - LORIN FARR PART 3

After the long journey from northern Vermont, the Winslow Farr Sr. family took up residence in Kirtland, Ohio. Winslow bought a home in Kirtland, and then sold it for a profit. They became better acquainted there with the church leaders. Within a year, persecutions of the church heated up and Joseph Smith, along with Brigham Young, were forced to leave and go with others to Missouri. While Winslow Sr. headed back to Vermont to sell more of his acreage, Aaron and Lorin headed west with others to Missouri.

Lorin Farr arrived ahead of his brother, Aaron, at Far West, Missouri. There Lorin became better acquainted with Joseph Smith and his family. Lorin was with the Saints during the awful persecutions of that time. He was with the Prophet Joseph at Adam-Ondi-Ahman when Joseph received the terrible news of the mob killings at Haun's Mill. Lorin lived with the Smith family for a time and got to know and love the family. He admired Emma who had suffered so much through all of her husband's persecutions. Lorin served as a scribe, bodyguard, messenger and in other functions, in service to Joseph Smith. Lorin said of Joseph Smith, 'I know him to have been a great, good and true man, and one who never betrayed his trust.' Lorin also taught the children of Joseph and Emma, as well as other children of the leaders in the Mormon community.

As persecutions increased, homes were burned, lives taken, women and children abused and the saints were driven out into the cold of winter. The Farr family was not as tormented as others, as they lived in their wagons and lean to. As Father Winslow said, 'they couldn't get much from us.' With Governor Boggs' extermination order, the main body of saints were driven from Missouri. Some of the leaders, including Joseph Smith, suffered months of imprisonment. During this time Lorin acted as a messenger, delivering notes back and forth between Emma and Joseph.

The Farr's settled in Lima, Illinois for a time, after which they moved with the rest of the saints to Commerce, Illinois; a boggy and swampy land. Here they drained the swamps and created the beautiful city, 'Nauvoo.'
